Mon, 13 Nov 2006 Gallery2 and the NIH syndrom   >>

Yesterday I installed and played with gallery2. Gallery is web photo album software with a large and thriving developer (and user) community.

Installation was a breeze and although the initial look&feel of the thing is, uhm, sub-optimal, there's so much built-in functionality I felt compelled to give it a thorough test to see if it would fit my needs.

And it does!

So, Pilaster is dead now?

Well, yes, realistically speaking I think it is. After tons of attempts with lots of interesting ideas, I think I now wanted to use something that Just Works (even though I spent a day tweaking the look&feel and it will take some more time) and has lots of cool features already builtin.

So, I have finally overcome my dose of NIH - Not Invented Here - !!

(and I'll just completely ignore the fact it's written in PHP ;)

Sun, 08 Oct 2006 Quick first try with Hugin   >>

A quick first one hour try to create a panorama resulted in an already quite impressive result...

Tue, 03 Oct 2006 Summer Holidays 2006   >>

Finally I finished making a selection and doing some post-processing of the photos I took during our summer holidays in France. Here's a sample out of the complete set

(And actually, it's not completely finished yet: there's a bunch of photos waiting to be stitched together into panoramas.Which gives me a opportunity to work and experiment with Hugin.)

Sat, 29 Jul 2006 Sverre's Lego constructions   >>

Building airplanes is still part of daily routine. But there're other subjects to legofiy now as well... Cars and animals!

His explanation: "The animal (in the third picture) is supposed to be a friendly Panda bear, with sharp nails and scary eyes. And whenever he runs into another mean animal, he will growl at him - Grooooowwwwlll!!"

Yummy, BIG engines! :-)

Thu, 30 Mar 2006 Lego airplanes   >>

Sverre built some more airplanes :-) I'm biased, but I think there're great!

The first is a Transavia, which is kind of obvious if you know that Transavia's colorscheme is indeed dark-green and white (well, it was their colorscheme, because recently they changed the styling and when we visit Rotterdam Airport he's eager to point out to you whether the aircrafts that await departure are in the old or new colors).

The second is a mini-airplane built for mum.

The third plane is his interpretation of a Saab Viggen we both saw landing on Aviodrome. Pay attention to the details... And he assured me that the tail end was supposed to be off-center :)

(and now I should start doing something about my photographic skills to make the photo log a bit more consistent :)

update: I added a couple more creations. Most notable is the use of a very professional-looking giant jet-engine and a very aerodynamic shape :-)

Wed, 22 Mar 2006 Sverre's Lego constructions   >>

Sverre's Lego constructions are becomming more and more life-like and well thought-out. For me, as father who has played with Legos a lot when he was a kid, this is so cool :-)

I'll try to keep a little log of his creations. Here's a first batch:

Sun, 30 Oct 2005 "Modeled in some solid substance" *   >>

A small collection of photo's I took from statues over time.

There're found in Zaltbommel (Netherlands, 1 and 2), Glamondans (France, 3 and 4), Vienna (Austria, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10) and Goteborg (Sweden, 11, 12 and 13).

* I took the title from the defintion for ``statue`` in the ``The Collaborative International Dictionary of English v.0.48``.
